Innovation : The smartphone as new transportation tool

In Yaounde, accessing a bike or taxi no longer starts on the street, but on a smartphone. Mobile applications are quietly transforming how residents move across the city, replacing informal roadside practices with digital coordination.

In the streets of Yaounde, motorcycle taxis continue to dominate short-distance travel. They are fast, flexible, and deeply integrated into the rhythm of urban life. However, a quiet transformation is underway as mobile technology begins to redefine how passengers and drivers interact.

The journey now begins before they even step outside. A mobile application is opened, a destination is entered, and a nearby driver is automatically assigned. This shift removes much of the informal negotiation that once defined roadside transport. Instead of bargaining over fares or waiting at busy intersections, passengers now rely on digital coordination to organize their movement.

Among the platforms contributing to this change is Yango, a ride-hailing application that uses geolocation to connect users with nearby drivers. The app allows passengers to see estimated prices, track arrivals in real time, and follow their route during the trip. 

This evolution is felt differently by users. A university student in Yaounde describes the experience as more predictable. “When I use the app, I don’t have to argue about the price anymore. I just wait, and the driver comes directly to me,” he says, highlighting the convenience of app-based transport.

A taxi driver in Yaounde however explains, “With the app, I get clients more easily, but I also have to follow the system. Sometimes you wait less, sometimes you feel controlled by the platform.” His testimony reflects the balance between opportunity and new forms of regulation introduced by digital systems.

Despite these changes, urban transport in Cameroon remains shaped by broader structural challenges, including congestion, infrastructure gaps, and a heavy reliance on informal mobility networks. The introduction of smartphone-based platforms does not replace this system but overlays it with a layer of digital coordination.
