Gregory’s bakery: « Some people see bread, I see passion »

At his home-turned-bakery in Yaounde, Gregory, a young self-taught Cameroonian baker, is gradually building a name for himself through pastries, customised cakes and bread promoted mainly on social media platforms such as Instagram and WhatsApp.

Driven by passion and determination, the young entrepreneur taught himself baking through online tutorials, personal research and years of practice before transforming the skill into a business. Today, his creations attract a growing clientele in the city, especially among young people and event organisers looking for customised pastries and modern cake designs.

In a context where youth unemployment remains a major concern in Cameroon, Gregory’s journey reflects a growing wave of young entrepreneurs creating opportunities for themselves through creativity and self-learning. What began as a personal passion inside his family home has progressively evolved into a small but expanding business.

Most of Gregory’s orders are received online. Through Instagram, WhatsApp and other digital platforms, clients place orders for birthdays, ceremonies and personal events. Between replying to messages, planning deliveries, managing customer expectations and spending long hours baking, his daily routine is both demanding and fast-paced.

As activity continues to grow, Gregory now works with two young assistants who help with packaging and deliveries. Beyond building his own future, the young baker is also creating opportunities for others around him. « I started by just trying things on my own. I failed many times, but I never stopped learning,“ Gregory confesses to Nicescoop.

Self-made patissier with training

For Gregory, baking is more than business. It is proof that passion, discipline and persistence can open doors even without formal training. Nevertheless it was uncovered by Nicescoop that at some point between the need of expansion of his business, Gregory had to through what he referred to “short courses“. “These courses helped a lot with obtaining certifications,“ he explained. “In this field of work, credibility and reputation stick. So in order to have big shot clients, I had to take baking courses,“ concluded Gregory.

Profit isn’t always stable but Gregory revealed to be satisfied with his job. When asked by Nicescoop if he would rather much rather choose another profession with a fix amount of money every end of the month, Gregory’s reply was a resounding “NO“.
