Youth unemployment in Cameroon on decline
Data from the World Bank and the Institut National de la Statistique indicate a gradual decline of youth employment in Cameroon in recent years. However, it remains a structural issue.
Available data shows a decrease in youth unemployment over the past decade. According to the World Bank, the youth unemployment rate in Cameroon has remained relatively low compared to global averages, fluctuating around 6–7% in recent years.
This decline reflects a degree of labor market absorption. However, the trend remains slow and does not indicate a structural transformation of employment conditions.
An indicator that does not capture the full reality
The unemployment rate alone does not fully reflect labor market conditions. A significant proportion of young people in Cameroon are engaged in informal or vulnerable employment.
According to the International Labour Organization, underemployment and informal work are key characteristics of labor markets in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Cameroon.
This means that while many young people are technically “employed,” their jobs often lack stability, formal contracts and adequate income. As a result, low unemployment figures can coexist with widespread economic vulnerability.
