The medical air transport service is intended to facilitate the rapid transfer of patients between locations where ground transport may not provide sufficient speed for emergency care. The system is designed for cases involving critically ill or injured patients who require urgent hospital-based treatment.

According to hospital information, the service is intended for emergency evacuations, including incidents such as severe accidents and acute medical conditions. The helicopter is used to transport patients and medical personnel when necessary. It is also intended to support access to areas where road transport may be limited or delayed. The service forms part of emergency response arrangements linked to the hospital’s operations.

The Ministry of Public Health has implemented several measures in recent years aimed at strengthening emergency response capacity. These include the reinforcement of emergency medical services, the organization of patient transport systems, and the improvement of coordination between health facilities.

One out of other efforts

In Yaounde and other regions, the Ministry of Public health has also supported the upgrading of transport resources for health personnel and emergency operations, with the objective of improving response times and access to care in critical situations.

According to official health system assessments, Cameroon is also working on strengthening its emergency care system through structured national reforms, including transport and pre-hospital care improvements supported by international partners such as the World Health Organization.

The launch of a medical air transport service at the Yaounde General Hospital reflects ongoing efforts within Cameroon’s health system to improve emergency response capacity. These efforts are aligned with broader Ministry of Public Health initiatives focused on strengthening patient transport and emergency care services, while also highlighting innovation and development in the modernization of public health infrastructure.
